Spanberger and Senate Democrats Continue Affordability Hoax on Virginia Families

RICHMOND, VA – While Virginia families struggle under rising energy bills, Governor Abigail Spanberger is focused on partisan political moves. Democrats’ affordability claims are a hoax and a con job. In her State of the Commonwealth address, the Governor said, “Virginia has some of the finest colleges and universities in the world. And yet, news story after news story isn’t about their successes. It’s about them becoming political battlegrounds…This ends right now.” Yet one of her first acts, appointing new members to the boards of Virginia’s universities, does not match that promise. Instead, it’s an overt partisan political game.

Today, Senate Democrats made their allegiance clear in pushing Governor Spanberger’s partisan political game with passage of Senate Joint Resolution 61, approving the Governor’s new appointments to UVA, GMU, and VMI.

“Senate Democrats are pushing higher taxes on everything from energy bills to Netflix, Amazon deliveries, Hulu, Spotify, haircuts, and gym memberships,” said Senate Republican Leader Ryan McDougle. “Instead of lowering costs for Virginia families, they are doubling down on the affordability hoax and playing partisan games with Governor Spanberger.”

“Virginians want relief, not new taxes on the basics of everyday life,” said Caucus Chairman Mark Obenshain. “Democrats are raising costs across the board while joining Spanberger’s political power grab instead of focusing on real affordability.”

The Virginia Senate Republican Caucus remains laser focused on proposals that lower energy bills, grocery prices, gas, and healthcare for hardworking Virginia families.
