Senate Republicans Put Affordability First: Repeal Energy Mandates & Ensure Families Don’t Subsidize Data Center Power Costs

RICHMOND, VA — Senate Republican Leader Ryan T. McDougle and Senate Republicans are committed to repealing policies that have raised Virginia’s power bills and ensuring that families will not subsidize data center power costs.

“I am glad the Governor is finally talking about high power bills and data centers. Virginians already are,” McDougle said. “This should not be a partisan issue. Virginians — Democrats, Republicans, and Independents — will tell you the same thing. Their power bills went up. The laws raising electric bills — the tax on carbon, the Virginia Clean Economy Act, solar mandates, and more — should be repealed, and the companies building data centers should pay their own costs.

“This is common ground. Senate Republicans are putting our commitment on the table first. We will continue to fight to repeal policies that have driven up electric bills, and we will make sure no Virginian’s utility bill rises to pay for a data center’s power. The Governor should keep her campaign promises on ‘affordability’ and join us.”
